Lu and girlfriend Vicki.
The decision to study abroad may mean that you will have to live in a different country than your partner, making a long distance relationship the reality for many international students.?? If you are currently in a long distance relationship while you study at Ryerson, you are far from being alone!
ISS staff member Zhengyun Lu shares his experience being in a long distance relationship.? Originally an international student from China, Lu recently completed his degree at OCAD and is currently working at ISS on his post graduation work permit.? His girlfriend Vicki has dual Canadian-Hong Kong citizenship and is currently an international student studying at NYU.? They have been dating for 5 years, 1 ? years which has been long distance.
?We have to share mundane everyday experiences like studying and working that you would not really focus on if you saw each other regularly,? says Lu.? ?You need to find an appropriate time to talk during your hectic schedules, what is good for us is that we are in the same time zone,? remarked Lu.
A long distance relationship is not without challenges.? Although it is easy to see and talk to your partner through skype and facebook, physical contact is impossible.? ?If you build your relationship on looks alone, the relationship probably won?t work out,? Lu said.
Perhaps one benefit of a long distance relationship is that it allows you to focus on the core strengths of what brought the two of you together. ???We have a lot of common interests.?? She studies communication and cultural theory, politics, and history.?? I am interested in these things so we always have something to talk about,? said Lu.
Trust is a crucial element in making a long distance relationship work.? ?I?m very faithful and loyal?, remarked Lu, ?we must trust each other.?
Lu uses skype to talk to Vicki.? An additional challenge is the fact that he always has to ensure that he has a valid US Visa to visit her.?? ?I visit her every three months, usually over the holidays,? said Lu.? While Vicki is gone, Lu?s dog Bean Bean keeps him company.
His advice is to focus on school work and hobbies while you are apart.? ?If you really love the person, and you think that s/he is worth it, then I would recommend maintaining a long distance relationship.? Discipline is important; don?t get caught up partying with your single friends!?
ISS wishes all of you a Happy Valentine?s Day!? Tomorrow all of that candy will be on sale, yay!!!
