Growing Up Geek: Jon Fingas

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have our new editor, Jon Fingas.

You might say I started early. Some of my first memories of technology -- or of anything, really -- were of mashing the keyboards on Compaq PC clones at my dad's workplace when I was three. Little did I know that I'd started on a path towards technology that would lead me towards mashing the keyboards for a career that would land me here at Engadget.

Ivy Bridge-packing Inspiron 15R hiding in plain sight on Dell's Singapore site

It may not be as wavy as the alloyed 15R from a couple of years back, but this new "special edition" Inspiron is packing a few goodies that are far more interesting than a set of sinuous patterns. Thanks to a product page on Dell's Singapore website, we were able to spot one of the company's first Ivy Bridge machines, the Inspiron 15R. Per the listing, Dell's 15.6-inch laptop is sporting a hot-off-the-press Core i7-3612QM CPU, 6GB or 8GB of RAM (depending on configuration), AMD Radeon HD 7730M graphics and a 1TB, 5400RPM hard drive. Additionally, you'll be able to choose between two different displays: an HD WLED, 1366 x 768 or a 1920 x 1080, FHD True-Life. As of right now, the better-specced of the two models is carrying a hefty S$1,749 price tag (around $1,410 in American dollars), while the lower-end 15R is S$1,599. Those living in Singapore can hit up the source link below if you'd like to grab a piece of that fresh Ivy Bridge pie.

[Thanks, Jason]

Target pulls Kindle from virtual shelves, physical ones may follow

Target pulls Kindle from virtual shelves, physicals ones may follow

Since 2010, Target has happily hawked Amazon's e-reading wares. The retailer even carved out a branded corner of its online shop just for the Kindle. Now though, that store within a store is empty and conspicuously missing from Target's virtual shelves is Amazon's entire Kindle line. Sure, a few accessories remain, but the readers themselves are gone. What's more, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge, the products will be cease to be restocked at the company's brick and mortar locations starting May 13th. The communique states that, after evaluation, Target "has made the decision to no longer carry Amazon hardware."

The reasoning behind the banishment isn't clear, but the potential causes are practically endless. Amazon's vast online repository of goods, including some grocery items, makes it a direct competitor of the big box outlet. Target continues to carry the Nook and Kobo e-readers, but those company's don't challenge the retailer. It's also possible that, with mini Apple Stores opening up on its premises, Cupertino put some pressure on Target to clear out its competitors. It could also be as simple as collapsed contract negotiations, with Target failing to get as big a cut of sales as it wanted or, and this is a bit of a stretch, the Minneapolis company could be preparing to launch its own e-reading hardware. Neither Amazon nor Target has responded to our requests for comment at this time.

Update: Target has affirmed the move to Reuters, with the following statement: "Target is phasing out Amazon- and Kindle-branded products in the spring of 2012."

The message that the audience can get once you have capital letters in your slides is that you just are shouting. Keep in mind that the projector amplifies everything within the slide, thus, not like print during which you have gotten to focus on the key parts, in slides, the secrets to be delicate and understated to urge your message across.

Another good way to speak any material in an exceedingly slide is to use tiny doses of humor. Light-weight touches of fun will enliven your presentation, create it sound am fond of it is returning from a personality's and provides it a definite temperament. The necessary issue is that the audience ought to connect with it as they might with an individual speaking.

This Mom Loves: Books For Moms (That You'll Want To Read)

Some of my readers eagerly anticipate my book recommendations, and rush to the bookstore or library right away. Others have informed me that book reviews for?mothers are a waste, because who has time to read?

Well, today's suggestions aren't huge tomes of fiction. Rather, they're all worthwhile non-fiction selections which you may actually find as valuable as I do. Give me a chance?here!

Toronto Fun Places by Nathalie Pr?zeau

This family-tested guide to year-round fun in the?GTA and Southern Ontario outlines hundreds of outings you could take with your family, including:
  • All the things to do within a 10 minute walk of every subway station in Toronto (I think that would be a great adventure with my girls some summer day)
  • Tips, nearby attractions, driving time, age recommendations, etc.
The book is?divided into sections (including Amusement Corner, Farms, Holiday Outings, Museums, Sports and Water Fun) and the tips given for each attraction?are very helpful to parents. If you live anywhere near the?GTA, put?this one on your Mother's Day list. You can also check out the website.

celebraTORI by Tori Spelling

I'm sorry, but I really enjoy Tori Spelling's books. I always like to think that I'm privy to behind-the-scenes Hollywood info, and in this case, Tori shares her party-planning secrets. There are tons of photos (of the lavish parties thrown by her mother when she was a child, as well as many of the recent?f?tes Tori has hosted), funny stories, and some tips that are actually helpful to middle-class party throwers as well. Sections include Essentials, Getting Started, D?cor, Flowers, Food and Drink, and The Dessert Table.

I read through it in a night (not spending too long on the recipes, of course) and I'll be keeping it as a reference. If you enjoy entertaining, and want some creative, budget-friendly ideas cool enough for L.A., this one's for you.

For My Children: A Mother's Journal of Memories, Wishes and Wisdom by Dionna Ford

This beautifully designed and illustrated book is full of creative prompts that will spark Mom's recollections so she can record them for her children. Full of questions for Mom to answer (List some of the things you have learned from your children, What moments have made you most proud of your child?, Who makes you laugh and what do you laugh about?) when complete, this will be an irreplaceable memento.

I once gave my Grandma a similar book for Christmas, and the next year she returned it to me complete. I will always treasure the thoughts she shared, which I can now pass on to my girls.

This won't be a quick project, and I expect it will take my daughters' entire childhoods for me to attempt to fill every page (Maggie's "baby book" is still under construction), but I am certain they will treasure it when it's finished.

What Would Michelle Do? A Modern-Day Guide To Living With Substance and Style by Allison Samuels

This one is an interesting mix of self-help and biography. Interspersed with facts and anecdotes about the life of Michelle Obama, the book aims to help young women find their place, and navigate the difficult terrains of home, work, friends and relationships.

A very American concept (I don't think we'll be seeing a "What Would Laureen Do?" book anytime soon (probably because half of you are now asking "Who's Laureen?"), I was still?interested in learning more about the First Lady, who seems?like a very grounded wife and?mother. I felt a little old for some of the sections (e.g. since I'm already in my dream job - minus report cards and winter yard duty?- I just skimmed some of the employment-related tips) but enjoyed reading about Michelle's style and parenting.?While some of the advice is?very indirect ("Here are?five films that?Michelle surely would approve of...") other tidbits are from celebs, family members?and other direct sources who are closely acquainted?with the famous First Lady. I paid particular attention to some of the quotes from Michelle herself which really resonated with me:

"For me, fashion is fun, and it's supposed to help you feel good about yourself. I think that's what all women should focus on: what makes them happy, feeling comfortable and beautiful. I wear what I love. Sometimes people love it, sometimes they don't. I'm fine with it."

"I have freed myself to put me on the priority list and say yes, I can make choices that make me happy."

"You do what you have to do for your children to have the lives you want them to have. It's difficult and sometimes you have no idea how you will get it all done, but you do. You may have to lean on a lot of people along the way but you'll get it done."

***********

I know, I know...you have no time to read, much less tackle Toronto's subway stations, throw a party, fill in a journal, or worry about following in the footsteps of a First Lady.?But if you had to pick?

Beyonce on Fake Pregnancy Rumors: Crazy!

She had her baby months ago, but Beyonce is now commenting on - and speaking out against - claims that she was faking her pregnancy for the first time.

"That was crazy," the 30-year-old said of rumors that a surrogate was carrying her and Jay-Z's first child together. "It wasn't hurtful, and it was just crazy."

"[I thought] ‘Where did they come up with this?'"

Blue Ivy Photo

Equally insane, she said, was the rumor surfacing after this Australian TV interview, in which Bey's baby bump appeared to "deflate" when she sat down.

"It was a fabric that folded ...does fabric not fold?," Beyonce said of the prosthetic baby bump rumor tabloids soon ran with. "Oh my gosh, so stupid."

She and Jay-Z weren't the only ones miffed by it.

Younger sister Solange was vocal about the "ignorance" on Twitter, while tales of surrogacy also upset The "Love on Top" singer's mom, Tina Knowles.

"I thought it was very unfair and very cruel that someone would think that someone would be that diabolical to keep up a charade like that," Tina said.

In spite of all the "stupid rumors," Beyonce said "love and well wishes" from fans and the utter joy of welcoming Blue Ivy Carter helped her get over it.

Looking at the photo above, you can see how.
