NATO hopes for reopening of Pakistan supply route (AP)
KABUL, Afghanistan ? NATO says it hopes for a quick reopening of the blocked supply routes through Pakistan because the 5-week closure is damaging the economies of both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
NATO spokesman Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson says the coalition has a stockpile of supplies that can keep operations in Afghanistan running at their current level even if those routes remain closed.
Islamabad shut the routes ? which NATO uses to ship about 40 percent of the supplies for its forces in landlocked Afghanistan ? after alliance airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani border troops in November.
The coalition has reduced its dependence on Pakistan over the last two years by developing alternative routes that enter Afghanistan through Russia and Central Asia.

Galpin Auto Sports Preps BOSS 429-Inspired Mustang For Auction
With all the focus on the Boss 302 Mustang released by Ford, it can be easy to forget about the Big Boss. We mean of course the Boss 429 Mustangs, boasting enough big-block power and torque to tear a tree stump out of the ground. With today?s focus on fuel economy though, it?s unlikely that we?ll see Ford bring back gas-guzzling big-block motors anytime soon.
Back in August, the guys from the world-famous Galpin Auto Sports unveiled concept sketches for a widebody Mustang inspired by the 429 Mustang of yesteryear. It will be auctioned off for charity at next months Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Galpin didn?t turn to some body kit for their widebody bad-boy, but rather fabricated a custom widebody from metal for this particular Mustang. The widebody gives this Mustang a very mean, muscular look, like its ready to pounce. The Boss 429 inspiration can be seen across the whole Mustang, from the hood and side scoops to the chunky butt and unamused front fascia. We?re pretty sure the original Boss 429 didn?t have 22-inch wheels in back and 21-inch wheels up front, but whatever, right?
The original Boss 429 was rated at 375 horsepower, although word on the street was that they made closer to 400 or 500 horsepower. The Galpin Auto Sports Mustang makes over 700 horsepower thanks to a Ford Racing supercharger. Galpin will auction off this Mustang, with the proceeds going to benefit St. Jude?s Children?s Hospital. A great car for a great cause. What do you think it will bring at auction?

US seals $3.48B missiles, technology sale to UAE
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The United States has reached a deal to sell $3.48 billion worth of missiles and related technology to the United Arab Emirates, a close Mideast ally, as part of a massive buildup of defense technology among friendly Mideast nations near Iran.
Pentagon spokesman George Little announced the Christmas Day sale on Friday night. He said the U.S. and U.A.E. have a strong defense relationship and are both interested in "a secure and stable" Persian Gulf region.
The deal includes 96 missiles, along with supporting technology and training support that Little says will bolster the nation's missile defense capacity.
The deal includes a contract with Lockheed Martin to produce the highly sophisticated Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, weapon system for the U.A.E.
Tom McGrath, vice president and program manager for Lockheed Martin's THAAD program in Dallas, said in a statement it was the first foreign military sale of the THAAD system.
THAAD interceptors are produced at Lockheed Martin's Pike County Facility in Troy, Alabama. The launchers and fire control units are produced at the company's Camden, Arkansas, facility.
Wary of Iran, the U.S. has been building up missile defenses of its allies, including a $1.7 billion deal to upgrade Saudi Arabia's Patriot missiles and the sale of 209 Patriot missiles to Kuwait, valued at about $900 million.
On Thursday, the Obama administration announced the sale of $30 billion worth of F-15SA fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.
Under the fighter jet agreement, the U.S. will send Saudi Arabia 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more. Production of the aircraft, which will be manufactured by Boeing Co., will support 50,000 jobs and have a $3.5 billion annual economic impact in the U.S.
All the sales are part of a larger U.S. effort to realign its defense policies in the Persian Gulf to keep Iran in check.
The announcement came as U.S. officials weighed a fresh threat from Tehran, which warned this week it could disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital Persian Gulf oil transport route, if Washington levies new sanctions targeting Iran's crude exports.
Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, the third-ranking U.S. diplomat, will travel to Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. next week to discuss "ongoing developments" in the region with senior officials of the two nations, the State Department said Friday.

With China set to outperform the US as the world?s largest smartphone market, international industry tycoons such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nokia are looking to China as their next target for market growth. Chinese handset manufactures are well aware of the tactics typically used by these giants to strong arm their way into a territory and are starting to mount a defense to protect their interests.
Lenovo, ZTE, TCL, Coolpad, and Konka have formed an alliance in order to collectively ?lawyer-up? when potential patent infringements lawsuits strike. Sources have drawn attention to the fact that companies like Huawei, who was previously a target of one of Microsoft?s threats, and ZTE own numerous wireless communications patents and would be able to present a surmountable defense, even in the face of international giants such as Microsoft, Apple, and Nokia.
Perhaps just the forming of this alliance will make some companies think twice before pulling the trigger on a patent war in China, but if history is any indication of the future, Chinese vendors will most likely find themselves defending their interests in the near future.
