Deep brain stimulation helps some people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but no one was quite sure why it is effective. A new study offers an explanation: the stimulation has surprisingly pervasive effects, fixing abnormal signalling between different parts of the brain.
A small number of people with difficult-to-treat OCD have had electrodes permanently implanted deep within their brain. Stimulating these electrodes reduces their symptoms.
To work out why stimulation has this effect, Damiaan Denys and Martijn Figee at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and colleagues recorded neural activity in people with electrodes implanted into a part of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. This region is vital for conveying motivational and emotional information to the frontal cortex to guide decisions on what actions to take next. In some people with OCD, feedback loops between the two get jammed, leading them to do the same task repeatedly to reduce anxiety.
The researchers took fMRI scans as participants rested. In 13 people with OCD and implanted electrodes, there was continuous and excessive exchange of signals between the nucleus accumbens and the frontal cortex that was not seen in 11 control subjects. When the electrodes were activated, though, the neural activity of both brain regions in the people with OCD became virtually identical to that in the controls.
The researchers also used EEGs to monitor electrical activity in the brain as the 13 people with OCD viewed images linked with their obsessions, such as cleaning toilets. This time, the team observed excessive activity in the frontal cortex ? and again, this activity disappeared when the electrodes were activated.
"The most striking thing is that stimulation doesn't just affect the nucleus accumbens, but the whole network linked up with the cortex," says Figee.
The study suggests that the electrodes do more than normalise brain activity at the site where they are implanted, as had been assumed. Rather, they appear to repair entire brain circuits that had been faulty. "It resets and normalises these circuits," says Figee.
Thomas Schlaepfer at the University of Bonn, Germany, points out that such work may allow researchers to use deep brain stimulation to learn about the causes of OCD as they treat it. "It will serve as a research platform informing us about the underlying neurobiology of such disorders," he says.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A doctor who oversees Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's medical care says the president is able to speak and understand people around him as he recovers from a stroke he suffered over two months ago.
In an interview Sunday Dr. Najmaldin Karim described the improvement in the president's health as encouraging and "a good development." Karim oversees Talabani's medical care when he is in Iraq, although the president is currently in Germany for treatment.
Karim says he is hopeful Talabani will be able to return to Iraq, but acknowledged that any decision rests with the doctors treating him in Germany.
Talabani was rushed to a hospital on December 17 for what officials described as a serious stroke. He was later moved to Germany. Few details have been released about his condition.

Trintignant perfectly captures the resolve that eventually borders on obsession, as the woman he loves gradually, maddeningly, disappears before his eyes, and he does whatever he can to prevent it, though he knows it's impossible.
Many viewers will find echoes of their grandparents, parents, or even themselves in these characters.
A movie that is utterly worthy of its all-encompassing title.
The resulting interplay of ruthless restraint and unavoidable passion, plus the film's refusal to shrink from depicting the inevitable horrors of physical deterioration, is devastating.
In many ways it's the best horror film I've ever seen. At the same time, it's hard to recommend; I believe I will be struggling to forget this film as long as I live. I doubt I'll succeed.
As remarkable as Haneke's films are, not a one has been as transcendently generous as Amour, which is nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best foreign-language film.
Michael Haneke's most intimate and painfully truthful film - an exploration of what love means at the far end of life.
This is a movie almost too painful to watch at times, yet so masterfully composed and acted - Riva absolutely deserves her Oscar nomination, while Trintignant was robbed - that it's impossible to turn away.
Georges' irreversible decision may be courageous, but it requires no sacrifice on the part of his creator: for Haneke, it's business as usual.
Trintignant and Riva are unforgettably brilliant as the aging couple we can all identify with.
Haneke's startling film stands in stark contrast with other recent, comedic fare that seemingly addresses similar issues.
My review is categorized as 'favourable' not because I enjoyed the film (that's not Michael Haneke's intent) but because I recognise what he is trying to say and that he says it with a unique cinematic voice
Debilitation and loss of control is a harsh topic, yet Haneke's film is surprisingly gentle, exploring the constraints and options faced, as old age delivers its ultimate blow - the loss of self and ability to function with dignity
Amour is a pure depiction of love, in all its many forms.
The furthest thing from sweet sorrow imaginable, Amour gets real about the pain of parting in every sense of the word.
This subject matter is ripe for sentimentalization, but Haneke resists it at every turn, opting instead for unflinching honesty. It is the economy of theme paired with the subtle richness of character that make Amour so powerful.
Clearly, Amour, Michael Haneke and Emmanuelle Riva don't really need me to additionally sing their praises (although praise is indeed all I have), so let's discuss Jean-Louis Trintignant for a moment.
All is presented in Haneke's exacting style, one that I find controlling and a bit, well, smothering.
An insightful, memorable film about what it means to love.
A tale about love at its most terribly, backbreakingly difficult.
In many ways, it's a horror film, as the woman descends into helplessness, and - like the audience - the man can only watch. It's a potent piece of filmmaking.
The superb Trintignant and the Oscar-nominated Riva -- who would win, in a just world -- embody once-vigorous people in inevitable decline.

Investigators look down a hole in an alley near JJ's Restaurant after an explosion destroyed the establishment Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Kansas City, Mo.
By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News
More than 70 restaurants in Kansas City, Mo., have pledged to donate part of the Saturday receipts to support employees of the restaurant that was destroyed in a massive gas explosion this week.
The explosion Tuesday killed one person, who hasn't been identified, and injured 15 others. One person remained in critical condition Friday, NBC station KSHB of Kansas City reported.
The support effort for the staff of JJ's Restaurant was organized by the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association, which posted details on its Facebook page. By late Friday, the list of restaurants promising to donate 10 percent of their sales Saturday had grown to 74, KSHB reported.
JJ's, a Kansas City institution since 1985, was widely regarded as one of the premier dining locations in the Midwest, earning a 93 rating from Zagat's. The restaurant's wine cellar had been listed by The Wine Spectator as among the finest in the world.
You can watch the blast as it happened in this surveillance video obtained by KSHB:

It may seem as if many eateries, whether they are casual or formal, are jumping on the bandwagon of offering guests foods without wheat. The reason is wheat, barley and rye are the grains which cause distress in the digestive system as well as several other illnesses throughout the body that may not seem connected to wheat at first but upon closer look, are related. Gluten free restaurants San Francisco residents relish in the opportunity to choose eating out and not lacking healthy foods.
Recent research shows the wheat planted, harvested and sold to processing plants today is a far cry from that planted only a few decades prior to these seasons? crops. Today?s fields of wheat are a modified version of the original invented in a laboratory for farmers to be able to grow stronger, larger plants for a bigger profit. They are also able to feed more people, who may seem like a good thing on the surface, but the problem with this altered vegetation is they were never tested on the human body.
Wheat, or a product containing a portion of wheat, is baked, injected or filtered into foods from A to Z. Wheat is most predominantly placed in processed foods like cookies, crackers and any type of packaged goods. Wheat acts as a binding agent, gluing together the particles in food such as dough for pizza and helping to make cake expand.
Individuals who cannot tolerate this type of super charged grain may think they will have next to nothing to eat, but that is not the case. There are many wheat free options available when dining out. Creative culinary types have cooked up a wide and varied menu of delicious foods that will satisfy even the finickiest eaters.
Because most families do not eat away from home often, it is a special event so start with a tasty teaser. The predictable appetizers are covered in wheat before deep-frying, but there are countless other options. You might like to try grilled eggplant, tomatoes and feta cheese bites or goat cheese, lentils and brown rice rolls.
Once your appetite is wet from a delicious starter, your main course should follow with the same with yummy non-wheat ingredients. Meats, fish and pastas created without wheat are always filling main dishes. Although there are many other meals, minus the wheat, you could order if you are a vegan or vegetarian. Asian spicy noodles with nuts, made with squash or rice noodles instead of pasta, are always a favorite at many eateries.
Another option for avoiding wheat in good food is at the dessert cart. Surprising many people is that wheat is used in many fruit based sweets, even ones without flaky crust. Most diners are going out of their way to accommodate those who want more choices for finales for their meals that are minus the wheat. Try almond cherry ricotta cheese ice cream or wheat free double decadent chocolate brownies.
When dinning out, gluten free restaurants San Francisco patrons have their pick of great tasting options. Eliminating wheat from your daily diet is not a sentence for bland foods. You will find exciting and delicious platefuls to delight your tastes buds just about everywhere you look.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A sharply divided Congress isn't likely to jump at President Barack Obama's challenge for quick passage of a mortgage refinancing bill that supporters say could help millions of homeowners save big each year and boost the economy.
Obama praised the legislation in his State of the Union speech last week, saying the proposal would help more homeowners with mortgages backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac take advantage of low interest rates and refinance their loans.
Even with mortgage rates near a 50-year low, Obama said, too many families that have never missed a payment and want to refinance are being turned down.
"That's holding our entire economy back, and we need to fix it," the president said. "Right now, there's a bill in this Congress that would give every responsible homeowner in America the chance to save $3,000 a year by refinancing at today's rates. Democrats and Republicans have supported it before."
The economy's slow recovery from the recession gives the idea urgency, Obama said. "Send me that bill," he told members of Congress listening to his speech in the House chamber.
The proposal is part of a push by Democrats and the White House to help homeowners take advantage of low interest rates as a way to help the housing market recover and to give the economy a shot in the arm.
While the bill could gain traction in the Democratic-controlled Senate, it faces a rough road in the GOP-run House, where many Republicans favor scaling back the government's role in the housing market as a way of aiding the economy. Similar versions of the measure died in the House and Senate's lame duck sessions last year.
"At the moment, it's an uphill battle," said Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., who plans to file the House version of the bill.
Welch said he will reach out to Republicans this year in hopes of building more support, but the bill's association with the government-controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the federal housing agencies partly blamed for the collapse of the housing market, hurts its support base among GOP lawmakers.
"The American taxpayers have already sunk $190 billion dollars into the operations of Fannie and Freddie," said Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas, a member of the House Financial Services Committee. "It's time that we wind their operations down instead of using them as a piggy bank for failed programs that further delay the housing recovery. "
In the Senate, Democrats Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Barbara Boxer of California have legislation to aid borrowers who are current on their loans backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but who are not able to refinance because their home values have declined too much.
Nearly 12 million homeowners have Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans and stand to benefit refinancing, the two senators said. Many can't refinance at a lower rate because of red tape and high fees. The red tape has reduced competition among banks, so borrowers pay higher interest rates than they would if they were able to shop around more, according to the senators.
The bill also would reduce up-front fees that borrowers pay on refinances and eliminate appraisal costs for all borrowers. The measure seeks to expand the Obama administration's Home Affordable Refinancing Program, which saves an average homeowner about $2,500 per year, they said.
"Homeowners will have more money in their pockets, Fannie and Freddie will see fewer foreclosures, and the housing market and economy will continue building momentum," Boxer said.
Among the bill's supporters are the Mortgage Bankers Association, the National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Home Builders.
"It is another tool that can be out there to help stabilize the housing market and kick start the economy if consumers can, in fact, put another $100 bucks in their pockets every month," said John Hudson, government affairs chairman of the Association of Mortgage Professionals.
Similar proposals by Boxer and Menendez last year got bogged down in the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Republican attempts to add amendments on other housing issues beyond refinancing led to a stalemate.
Twenty Senate Democrats are co-sponsors of this year's bill, but no Republicans have signed on.
"I support finding ways to smartly streamline the refinance process, but I'm not sure that eliminating all documentation requirements makes sense," said GOP Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, a committee member. "I also think we need to quickly move beyond short-term stimulus and start focusing on the structural issues in our housing finance system."
Sen. Mike Crapo, the committee's top Republican, declined through a spokeswoman to comment on the bill.
Welch's House bill also died during the last Congress. Welch accused Republicans of not wanting to give Obama an election-year boost by passing the mortgage refinance measure.
"Last year was even tougher because it was an election year," said Welch. "The Republican leadership wanted Obama to fail."

North Dakota pumped a record 243 million barrels of crude in 2012, the Associated Press reports. That?s more than 90 million barrels than the record set a year earlier.
The Jamestown Sun says North Dakota produced nearly 769,000 barrels a day in December following a rare dip in November. That?s up 4.6 percent from the previous month and a new all-time high of 23.8 million barrels.
Bloomberg News notes production dropped 2.2 percent in November after a blizzard dumped 8 inches of snow on Williston.
North Dakota remains the second state in the U.S. for oil production behind Texas.
Election Election results 2012 exit polls Presidential Polls California Propositions Electoral College chuck pagano
In New York benchmark crude for March fell $1.45 to finish at $95.86 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, used to price many varieties of foreign oil, fell 34 cents to end at $117.66 per barrel in London.
The Federal Reserve said Friday that U.S. factory production slowed in January, mostly because of a big drop in output at auto factories. Most analysts think the slowdown is temporary, but it was enough to raise concern about the still-sluggish economic recovery.
"Global growth will still be fairly weak this year, which will prevent industry from firing on all cylinders. But there's no denying that industrial conditions have recently improved," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics.
Heading into the Presidents Day weekend, drivers are still seeing gas pump prices climbing. The national average is $3.64 a gallon, up a cent and a half from Thursday, with the highest prices in California, the Northeast and the Midwest.
Retail gasoline prices have been rising steadily as oil prices have lingered in the upper 90's and many refineries have slowed operations for seasonal maintenance. That is crimping supplies and pushing up prices.
"The annual switchover from winter to summer grade product by the refineries at this time of the year always represents a balancing act with the availability of cheaper-to-produce winter grade supply often times being reduced too much in order to make room for summer grade product," said independent analyst Jim Ritterbusch.
In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:
? Heating oil fell 1 cent to finish at $3.21 a gallon.
? Wholesale gasoline rose 2 cents to end at $3.13 a gallon.
? Natural gas fell 1 cent to finish at $3.15 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In case you hadn't heard, HTC's warming up for another phone launch, readying events in both New York and London. The UK arm has now offered up a countdown clock (six days to go!), but with an extra soupçon of tease -- some ever-so brief glimpses of its M7 device, rumored to land as the HTC One. Fortunately, someone's managed to track down all the teaser clips and stitch them together -- we've added it after the break. Alongside plenty of blinding light, we get a better peek at what seems to be a machined metallic edge around the device, as well as a single shot of the camera lens -- HTC does love its imaging tech. You can also glean that the device will arrive dressed white, just like its predecessor, the One X.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday it's unlikely the Republican-controlled House and Democratic-led Senate will prevent a wave of automatic spending cuts from beginning to strike the economy in two weeks. Yet he sounded hopeful about avoiding a partial shutdown of the government when a temporary spending bill expires next month.
Cloistered in his Capitol office overlooking the National Mall, Boehner said in an interview with The Associated Press that he was skeptical of many of President Barack Obama's plans, laid out the night before in the annual State of the Union address.
Boehner voiced doubts about Obama's proposal for taxpayer-funded help for pre-school education for all 4-year-olds, and would not commit to passing a pathway to citizenship for the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants, though doing so would be "somewhat helpful" to members of his party as they seek to regain support among Hispanics. "There's no magic potion that's going to solve our party's woes with Hispanics," he said.
Boehner also refused to swing behind any of Obama's gun-control proposals and said he opposed the president's plan to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour.
The Ohio Republican said he gets along well with Obama but admits their relationship hasn't generated much in the way of results, pointing to two failed rounds of budget talks in 2011 and at the end of last year. Boehner is frustrated that spending cuts Obama signaled he would agree to in 2011 have been taken off the table since the election.
"It hasn't been real productive the last two years, and frankly every time I've gotten into one of these high-profile negotiations, it's my rear end that got burnt," Boehner said. "It's just probably not the best way for our government to operate."
Obama stumped Wednesday in support of his minimum-wage plan, his calls for a manufacturing revival and his other State of the Union proposals in a trip to Ashville, N.C., where he said: "If you work full time, you shouldn't be in poverty." He takes his case to Georgia on Thursday and his hometown of Chicago on Friday, all part of his effort to build popular support for an agenda facing stiff resistance back in Washington.
"It's not a Democratic thing or a Republican thing," Obama said of his initiatives. "Our job as Americans is to restore that basic bargain that says if you work hard, if you meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead."
The immediate agenda, though, is dominated by $85 billion in automatic, across-the-board spending cuts ? called a sequester in Washington-speak ? set to slam the Pentagon and domestic programs over the coming seven months. Boehner said he has no plans to resurrect legislation passed by Republicans last year to block this year's sequester.
The speaker said that until Obama puts forward a plan to avoid the sequester and Senate Democrats pass it, "we're going to be stuck with it. It's going to be a little bleak around here when this actually happens and people actually have to make decisions."
Boehner noted that while plenty of GOP defense hawks are anxious about the automatic cuts, Democrats concerned with cuts to domestic programs have a lot on the line, too.
And he sounded glum about prospects that the two sides will come together in the spring on a separate, long-term budget blueprint to address the government's fiscal problems.
"It's hard to imagine that you could reconcile (the separate budgets) the House and Senate pass," Boehner said. "But at some point, in some manner, it almost has to happen if we're going to deal with our long-term spending problem."
In March, the House and Senate will take up competing long-term budget blueprints. In a break with past years, House Republicans promise to balance the budget within a decade ? without additional tax increases beyond the $600 billion-plus in tax increases on wealthier earners won by Obama as part of a deal to keep the rest of the Bush-era tax cuts.
He said that an impasse with Senate Democrats, who insist their rival budget plan will raise taxes and contain softer budget cuts, is probably inevitable.
Also looming is the need to pass legislation financing the government through the budget year ending Sept. 30. Here, at least, Boehner saw some promise, predicting a resolution will pass soon to head off a partial shutdown.
Washington's most powerful Republican was also non-committal on two of Obama's top second-term initiatives: overhauling the nation's immigration laws and enacting stricter gun control measures.
On immigration, Boehner told the AP he was "encouraged" by bipartisan efforts to reform the nation's fractured laws, but wouldn't say whether he would support a bill that includes a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants. Nor would he commit to a pathway to citizenship for the so-called "dreamers" ? young people brought to the U.S illegally.
"I'm not getting myself locked into a corner on what I'm for or what I'm against," he said.
On gun control, Boehner said he would consider measures passed by the Democratic-led Senate, but would not pledge to hold votes on any of Obama's core principles, including universal background checks for all gun purchasers. The expanded background checks are broadly supported by the public.
While not outright opposing background checks or Obama's other calls for limiting assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, the speaker said he preferred focusing on the link between mass shootings and mental health issues.
"When you look at all these mass shootings, almost every one of the individuals involved has a history of mental illness. So why don't we focus in on something real that really can attempt to minimize this problem, as opposed to some quick political fix that gives people a false sense of security," Boehner said. "There could be some link between mental illness and background checks. there's a nexus there where you could have some real impact."
Despite the sometimes frustrating nature of the job, Boehner says he'll run for Speaker again in two years, assuming Republicans keep control of the House.
"Absolutely. I've got a big job to do and I intend to get it done."

New Mexico basketball head coach Steve Alford likes to build from the basket out. Not only do the Lobos possess one of the most coveted centers in college basketball with Alex Kirk, but Alford is expecting to fill the post with yet another 7-footer.
Alford set to address the problem of height for New Mexico two years ago with the recruitment of Kirk, and has certainly filled the void with the 7-foot tandem of Kirk and 2012 recruit Obij Aget.
Aget committed to New Mexico last year and will join the team in June. Though still extremely raw, Aget will provide substantial support for the Lobos in the paint. The Mountain West is an incredibly undersized and New Mexico will be able to capitalize on the deficiencies of their opponents early in 2013.
The Lobos, and Alford, still have a few problems to address in reference to their new asset. Aget has unparalleled size but lacks the strength to be a true force on the block. New Mexico expects Aget to defend the basket and to support the flow of the offense while Kirk is resting on the bench. Kirk, now a sophomore, will most likely stay all four years in a Lobos uniform and should be a good example for Aget early on in the Sudan native?s career.
While playing high school ball for La Lumiere School in Indiana, Aget averaged 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocks each game. The Mountain West Conference is the perfect scenario for Aget to develop his talent, as the only player who can stop him is on the same team.
It?s obvious Aget will not make an immediate, dominating impact for New Mexico, but he?s certainly a project worth taking on for Alford and the Lobos. Aget graduated in the Class of 2012, even though he could pull off at least 35-years-old. The 7-footer considered attending Alabama, Florida State, Missouri and Texas in addition to New Mexico.
With two 7-footers likely to receive substantial playing time at the start of the 2013-14 season, it appears that Alford and the Lobos have gotten a bit greedy. Can you blame them?

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian police arrested the head of defense group Finmeccanica SpA
Finmeccanica Chief Executive and Chairman Giuseppe Orsi was arrested over bribes allegedly paid to secure the sale of 12 helicopters to India, when he was head of the group's AgustaWestland unit, a judicial source with direct knowledge of the situation told Reuters.
Police were searching Orsi's home and the offices of AgustaWestland close to Milan, a source close to Orsi's lawyer said. The Milan offices of state-owned Finmeccanica, Italy's second-biggest corporate employer after Fiat Spa
An Indian defense ministry source said kickbacks worth 40 million rupees allegedly paid to Indian officials to grease contracts for Finmeccanica were being probed and that Delhi was considering the deferral of the Finmeccanica helicopter deal, worth 560 million euros ($749.2 million).
The Italian business world has been shaken in recent weeks by a series of corruption cases, notably a derivatives scandal at Italy's No. 3 lender Banca Monte dei Paschi
Highlighting the political sensitivity of the Finmeccanica case ahead of national elections on February 24 and 25, Prime Minister Mario Monti said the Italian government would deal with management issues at the company.
"There is a problem with the governance of Finmeccanica at the moment and we will face up to it," Monti told RAI state television.
Orsi, a long-serving defense industry executive, has always denied any wrongdoing with regard to the corruption probe, which has been going on for a year.
In a brief statement, Finmeccanica expressed its support for Orsi and said it hoped his legal position could be clarified as soon as possible. Its business was operating as normal in the meantime, the company added.
The company's board could broaden the powers of Chief Financial Officer Alessandro Pansa to help manage the company, sources close to the matter said.
JUSTICE CARD
The wave of corporate scandals has become an issue in Italy's parliamentary election campaign. Orsi's appointment to lead the indebted defense group in May 2011 was backed by the Northern League party, an ally of then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Center-left politicians had called for Orsi to step down when he was first targeted in the corruption probe.
"Some of the parties clearly have an interest in playing the justice card for political capital in view of the vote," said Stefano Zamagni, professor of economics at Bologna University.
Besides Orsi, three other people have been placed under house arrest as part of the probe, including AgustaWestland chief Bruno Spagnolini.
Finmeccanica shares were down 8 percent by 5:55 a.m. ET, while its rail technology unit Ansaldo STS
Concern has been growing that the corruption probes could tarnish Finmeccanica's reputation and distract management while the company is carrying out a tough restructuring.
Being excluded from the growing Indian market could be a major headache for the group, which faces defense budget cuts in its main Italian, British and U.S. markets.
Under Indian defense procurement rules, companies found to have been involved in corruption can be punished with blacklisting and fines, an Indian defense ministry source said.
India, currently the world's largest weapons importer, has a history of corruption in defense deals. A multi-million dollar scandal in the 1980s over the purchase of Swedish Bofors artillery guns contributed to an electoral defeat for then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of the Congress party.
Orsi's arrest also risks derailing Finmeccanica's plans to sell its non-core energy and transportation assets, something the company wants to do to avoid further downgrades of its credit ratings.
The group has put up for sale its AnsaldoEnergia power engineering unit and its rail units Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo STS
In January, Standard & Poor's downgraded Finmeccanica to "junk" status after the group missed its target for 1 billion euros of asset sales by the end of 2012.

In singles, the Ducks continued their success from doubles as Robin Cambier began the day off with a?2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over?Samir Iftikhar in the top spot. A Fountain Hills jewelry store owner is attempting to break a 3-year-old world record by organizing the largest ever wedding vow renewal ceremony.
"Love in the Hills" is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, at Fountain Hills Park.
The event is being put on by Stephenie Bjorkman, owner of Sami Fine Jewelry store.
"It's completely free. Anyone can come. All we ask is that you bring a copy of marriage certificate and photo ID to participate. But, it's romantic, it's fun, it's crazy, it's chaotic, it's gonna be a blast," said Bjorkman.
If you are looking for an idea to impress your spouse on Valentine's Day, this might be a good way to score some points. Additionally, the event is free for everyone who participates.
Couples will also receive freebies from Sami Fine Jewelry and other sponsors.
More about the event can be found HERE.
The current world record for number of couples participating in a group wedding vow renewal stands at 1,087. That record was set at Miami University of Ohio in June 2009.
The Ripley's "Believe It or Not!" museum in St. Augustine, FL, attempted to break that record Sunday, however, only about 500 couples turned out.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Once largely united against the Obama administration's new health care overhaul, a growing number of Republican governors are now buying into parts of the system.
This week, Michigan's Rick Snyder became the sixth GOP governor to support expanding his state's health insurance program to cover more low-income residents.
Snyder concluded that the state's higher Medicaid cost would be outweighed by the large amount of federal money Michigan would receive.? Expanding Medicaid is optional for states, and most Republican governors have not agreed to do so.? Many fear the federal government could later renege on covering its share of the costs.
The administration is pushing the states to participate so that most low-income people will have health coverage when the new system begins next year.

Richard Rood, a landscaper from Aesthetic Gardens, installs a French drain in the backyard of a home in Palo Alto, where the homeowners are using a HELOC (home equity line of credit) to finance the improvements, on Jan. 30, 2013.
After years in the doldrums, Bay Area home equity borrowing jumped last year, reaching its highest level in four years as the housing market rebounded.
The increase is a welcome boost for the region's economy, as new home equity lines of credit -- known as "HELOCs" -- are tapped to pay for remodeling projects and other big ticket items, helping spur job growth.
"This is good news," said Mustafa Akcay, economist with Moody's Analytics. "The housing market has been in recovery now for about a year, and homeowners are accumulating equity on their dwellings, so more and more people are benefiting."
Last year, banks approved 17,844 home equity lines of credit in the counties of Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo
and Santa Clara, a gain of 20 percent from 2011 when that type of lending appears to have hit bottom, according to DataQuick, a real estate information service. The trend reflects renewed consumer confidence in the housing market and economy, said Kermit Baker, director of the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. Housing prices in the Bay Area increased at their fastest pace in 25 years in December, according to DataQuick.
"Consumers were hesitant to borrow against their homes" after the housing crash, Baker said. "We're sort of turning the corner on that."
The center estimates that spending on home improvements increased 9 percent nationally last year. About 20 to 30
percent of home equity borrowing is spent on remodeling, according to the Harvard center.Elizabeth Angell is tapping an equity line to improve the drainage of her Palo Alto home's backyard, fix a few fences and install a patio.
She said she decided to use the equity line "because interest rates are low, and I recently refinanced my mortgage at a really low rate, which opens up some additional cash to spend. The third thing is now that the election is over, there's more certainty about an economic rebound, so I had more confidence in my earning potential."
Angell is working with Rick Evans, who operates Bauman Builders and Aesthetic Gardens in San Jose. "The process is all very proper now, like the '70s," Evans said. "It's nothing like the days of the late '90s and early 2000s when they were passing out HELOCs like candy canes at Christmas."
Evans said Angell is one of two clients who are using their home equity to pay for remodeling jobs, in contrast to a year ago when his customers were using savings and stock to pay for work on their homes.
While more lines of credit were approved last year, the increase is a mere fraction of the borrowing that occurred during the housing boom, when prices and equity

skyrocketed. At the height of the boom in 2005, lenders approved 163,567 home equity loans in the four Bay Area counties, according to DataQuick.Equity lines of credit can be tapped and repaid like a credit card, but with interest rates that are much lower. Banks are much stricter than they were in the boom, requiring excellent credit scores and solid proof of ability to pay.
About 95 percent of home equity lending is going to homeowners with credit scores above 700 nationally, Moody's Akcay said. "I see some gradual easing, and this 95 percent will decline," he said. "Still, the process will be very slow."
The top five HELOC lenders approved 60 percent of the new equity lines in the Bay Area last year. They include Wells Fargo, up 13 percent from 2011; Bank of America, up 8.5 percent; US Bank, up 5.9 percent and Citibank, up 31 percent. The biggest increase was a 72 percent jump in equity lines approved by JPMorgan Chase.
"The question is whether this is likely the beginning of a meaningful trend," said Andrew LePage of DataQuick. "If so, it becomes a boost -- however modest in the beginning -- to the economy."
Some experts think the answer to LePage's question is yes.
"It's going to continue to rise," said Guy Cecala of Inside Mortgage Finance "It's poised for growth going forward."
Greg McBride of the website bankrate.com is predicting "a good year for home equity borrowers because rates will remain low, and with home prices stabilizing and beginning to rebound, more lenders will be competing for home equity business."

NEW YORK (AP) ? With its annual meeting looming and its stock on the decline, Apple is facing a rebellion from an influential investor who wants the company to stop stockpiling cash and give it to shareholders instead.
Greenlight Capital said Thursday that it is suing Apple in a New York federal court over the company's proposal to make it more difficult for it to issue preferred stock. David Einhorn, who heads the investment fund, said the proposal would close down one avenue for Apple to reward shareholders with more cash.
Apple is still the world's most valuable company, but its stock has lost 35 percent of its value since September, as it's become obvious that its once-rapid growth has slowed down. The company is fabulously profitable, and Wall Street wants the company to share more of that money with its shareholders rather than tucking it away in low-yielding bank accounts.
"Apple has $145 per share of cash on its balance sheet. As a shareholder, this is your money," Einhorn said in a letter to the company. He has a history of criticizing companies publicly, often after shorting their stocks.
In a statement Thursday, Apple said its management and board continue "active discussions" about what to do with the money, and it will take Einhorn's proposal into consideration.
Its $137 billion in cash makes up nearly a third of Apple's stock market value. Shares of the Cupertino, Calif., company traded at $456.95 in the late afternoon, up $2.25, or 0.5 percent, from Wednesday's close.
Corporations normally don't hoard cash the way Apple does. They keep enough on hand for immediate needs, and either invest the rest in their operations or hand it out to shareholders in the form of dividends or stock buybacks. If they need more cash for, say, an acquisition, they borrow it.
Einhorn told CNBC on Thursday that Apple was acting like his grandmother "Roz," who grew up during the Great Depression. People who've experienced financial trauma, he said "sometimes feel like they can never have enough cash."
Roz was so careful about saving money, Einhorn said, that she never left messages on his answering machine out of concern that she'd be charged for the call.
Einhorn's criticism hints at Apple's lean years in the mid-90s. Former CEO Steve Jobs came out of that experience with a very tight hold on the company's purse strings. Apple has never explained its reasons for hoarding the cash other than to say it is preserving its options. Since his death in Oct. 2011, Apple has begun paying a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share and started to repurchase some of its shares.
Analysts say the company should be doing more if it wants to lure investors back to its shares. Stuart Jeffrey at Nomura Securities calculates that Apple will generate about another $103 billion over three years to add to the $137 billion it has now, but it has only committed to returning $45 billion of this $240 billion in total cash to shareholders.
Wall Street didn't complain much about Apple's hoarding policies until its revenue growth started slowing. In the recent holiday quarter, Apple's revenue rose 18 percent from a year ago ? a very good figure for a company of its size, but a far cry from the 50 percent-plus increases it has often posted since the 2007 launch of the first iPhone. Apple hasn't launched a new ground-breaking product since the iPad in 2010, so the company is forced to expand the appeal of its current products to achieve growth.
The slowing growth has scared away investors who focus on fast-growing companies, and the relatively small dividend means the company doesn't get much respect from investors who look for regular income, analysts say.
Greenlight, a shareholder since 2010 with 1.3 million Apple shares worth nearly $600 million, wants Apple to create a class of preferred stock that carries a higher dividend, and give it away to current shareholders. That way, he believes the company would appeal to value investors and those who are risk-averse.
Einhorn said his firm has been talking to Apple over the past several months about the creation of the new share class. Apple, he said, rejected the idea in September. The company doesn't currently issue preferred stock. At its annual meeting on Feb. 27, it plans to ask shareholders to approve a measure that would force the board to get shareholder approval before issuing preferred shares.
Apple said in its proxy statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that its board does not plan to issue preferred stock in the future and believes it is "appropriate" to eliminate the possibility from its charter.
Greenlight urges Apple shareholders to vote against the proposal. In the lawsuit, it claims that the proposal bundles three distinct proposals that the SEC requires to be separated so shareholders can vote on each one.
In its statement, Apple said that even if the proposal passes, it could still adopt Greenlight's concept and issue preferred stock.
Apple has at least one major shareholder on its side. The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the country's largest pension fund, said in an SEC filing Monday that it will vote for Apple's proposal, which would also let shareholders vote against directors. CalPERS owns 2.7 million Apple shares, nearly three times as many as Greenlight.

On Saturday night, at the NFL?s second annual postseason awards show, current Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former Packers quarterback Brett Favre made a joint appearance.? Rodgers said Tuesday that he hopes it?s the first step in a new era between Rodgers, Favre, and the franchise.
?As the face of the franchise now, [it's] a role that I take very seriously,? Rodgers said Tuesday on his weekly ESPN Milwaukee radio show, via ESPN.com.? ?I have the responsibility and enjoy having the opportunity to represent my team.? I think it?s important to realize that it is probably time to move forward.?
Rodgers, who hadn?t spoken to Favre since he was traded to the Jets during the 2008 preseason, said it was easy to persuade the 2011 NFL MVP to agree to the joint appearance, despite the history of tension between Favre and Rodgers.
?It didn?t take a lot of coaxing for me to do it,? Rodgers said.? ?I did want to sit and think about whether it was the right thing to do.? I really feel very secure in my position with the team and feel good about the things that we?ve been able to accomplish in my five years as the starter, and feel good about the direction the organization is going in.
?Brett is two years removed from the game.? He?s going to obviously be in the Packers Hall of Fame.? He?ll get his number retired, and he?ll be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the next few years.? It?s important, I think, to make sure that he?s recognized for all the accomplishments that he?s achieved in our organization especially.? He?s still very dear to many of our fans for the things that he?s done for the Packers on the field.? You can never take that away.?
Rodgers also realizes that he has an opportunity to play a key role in welcoming Favre back into the fold.
?You think about what you want your legacy to be and how you want to be remembered,? Rodgers said. ?As I move forward . . . I think about how I want to be remembered, and this is one thing that I really want to move forward with.?
And so the hatchet between Favre and Rodgers appears to be on the way to being forever buried.? Eventually, we?ll find out if the guy who bumps Rodgers out of Lambeau is equally magnanimous.
