Following the success of the New Apple iPad?($499, 4.5 stars) with its 2,048-by-1,536-pixel Retina display, Android tablet?manufacturers are getting the picture?the high-definition picture, that is?and packing in the pixels. Much like Asus, with its Transformer Pad Infinity TF700?($499, 4 stars), Acer's Iconia Tab A700 ($449.99 list, 32GB) is nearly identical to the existing Iconia Tab A510?($449.99, 3 stars), but adds a high-resolution 1,920-by-1,200-pixel display. The A510 couldn't keep up with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201?($499, 4 stars), and the A700 falls short of the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. And both tablets are playing catch-up with the new iPad and its vast selection of tablet-centric and Retina-display-optimized apps.

Design and Features
The Iconia Tab A700 is physically identical to the lower-resolution Iconia Tab A510, from its dimensions (6.9 by 10.2 by .4 inches, 1.47 pounds) to its button and port placement. While that was fine for the thin (0.33 inches) and light (1.31 pounds) aluminum-clad Infinity Pad TF700, which was nearly identical to the Transformer Prime TF201, the Iconia Tab A700 remains as clunky and uninspiring as its plastic predecessor, the A510. At least the rubberized back is comfortable to hold.?

One welcome holdover is the micro USB to full-sized USB adapter and USB host mode capability. The tablet supports FAT32-format external storage devices, as well as USB keyboards and mice. This is pretty useful, and I was able to use a USB splitter to connect both a mouse and keyboard to the A700. Asus's keyboard dock accessories for its Transformer tablets add the same capabilities, and they emulate a laptop form factor while adding extra battery life, but they are also more expensive than using the peripherals you already own. Flanking the micro USB port are two speaker grilles that get moderately loud, but lack low-end oomph.

A Wi-Fi only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks, the A700 works on the 2.4GHz frequency band only. You also get Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and GPS, both of which worked fine in my tests. The A700 is available in black or silver, but only in a single 32GB configuration. A microSD card slot, hidden behind a plastic flap on the right panel, accepts cards up to 64GB. On the left side is a 3.5mm headphone jack, with a microHDMI port on the right for output to HDTVs.

Display, Apps, and Android
The high-resolution display is the main draw here, and it's looking like 1,920-by-1,200 is the new standard for 10-inch Android tablets. The A700's 10.1-inch display matches the Infinity TF700 in terms of sharpness, but the Asus wins out with its ultra-bright Super IPS+ display. Viewing angle and color saturation are similar on the two displays. At 224 pixels per inch, they both look incredibly sharp and clear. Text and high-res images look fairly comparable between the A700, TF700, and the new iPad, which packs 264 pixels per inch. During testing, I noticed that applying mild pressure to the A700's screen caused some unusual rippling under the glass surface. It didn't affect responsiveness and was very difficult to see with the screen on, but it's worth noting.?

The real difference is in the apps and even a lot of websites, where the iPad's dominance means developers are actually paying attention and optimizing specifically for that display. For example, article text in The New York Times looks comparable on the A700 and the new iPad, but some site graphics look sharper on the iPad's screen than they do on either of the two Android tablets'. The difference isn't in the hardware, it's that developers are writing their websites to detect the iPad and push higher resolution elements its way. That hasn't yet happened for Android.

That same problem carries over to apps, where Android dominance still belongs to the smartphone market. Apps are written for smaller screens and, generally, look pretty bad on 10-inch screens, with a lot of wasted space and/or stretched-out elements. Text almost always looks better on the A700 than the A510, but don't expect graphics to suddenly look much clearer. Android app developers have yet to take advantage of the high screen resolution. The App Store over at Apple offers more than 200,000 apps written specifically for the iPad, many of which are written with the Retina display in mind. The Google Play store, on the other hand, has a small section for recommended tablet apps, and even some of those are made for smartphone screens. There are also alternative app portals, like the Tablified Market?($1.49, 4 stars) or Nvidia's Tegra Zone, that offer well curated, but relatively sparse, selections of tablet apps.

The A700 runs Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Acer's Ring UI, which is a generally light skin, but further from stock Android than you'll find on Asus tablets. A virtual button at the bottom of the screen brings up the Acer Ring, which presents you with five customizable quick app shortcuts, Web bookmarks, and volume controls. The lock screen also features a ring of four customizable quick app shortcuts. You'll also find Acer Print, which lets you connect to Wi-Fi enabled printers, and the clear.fi DLNA media server for wirelessly pushing media to capable devices like HDTVs. Rounding out some of the more useful apps are Aupeo, an Internet radio app, McAfee Antivirus, and Polaris Office for Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Acer also tweaked the Android browser, adding the ability to display URLs as QR codes for sharing?though I don't know anyone who uses QR codes. One feature missing from the A700's browser, which can be found in the Asus tablets, is the ability to always request desktop sites. You can still check the 'Request Desktop Site' box in the browser's settings, but having to do that every time is pesky.

Whatever you do, it?s usually a safe bet that you should proceed with caution before you have a lengthy discussion about your relationship and it?s marriage potential. Guys are often more commitment-phobic than women at the beginning of stages. Then, later on, it tends to be the opposite. Regardless, every person is different. Give him at least three months before you discuss marriage. Sometimes if you come on too strong, you can stop a relationship that would have been perfect. I?m not saying to not ever talk about it ? just to wait at least three months. You also need time to figure out how you truly feel. Puppy love can be overwhelming and fade fast. Make sure what you have is real and lasting before you make any sort of declaration.

Bottom Line: You?ll know if marriage is in your future or not at a certain point. There will come a time when you know that you want to be with this man for the rest of your life, or you?ll never want to be with him for the rest of your life. There will come a time for him too. Don?t rush that moment. Let it happen when it happens. You?ll know ? and then be open to sharing your feelings with him and hopefully, he?ll be sharing his with you as well.

Date of earliest animal life reset by 30 million years

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? University of Alberta researchers have uncovered physical proof that animals existed 585 million years ago -- 30 million years earlier than previous records show.

The discovery was made by U of A geologists Ernesto Pecoits and Natalie Aubet in Uruguay. They found fossilized tracks a centimeter-long, slug-like animal left behind 585 million years ago in silty, shallow-water sediment.

A team of U of A researchers determined that the tracks were made by a primitive animal called a bilaterian, which is distinguished from other non-animal, simple life forms by its symmetry -- its top side is distinguishable from its bottom side -- and a unique set of "footprints."

U of A paleontologist Murray Gingras says fossilized tracks indicate that the soft-bodied animal's musculature enabled it to move through the sediment on the shallow ocean floor. "The pattern of movement indicates an evolutionary adaptation to search for food, which would have been organic material in the sediment," he said.

There were no fossilized remains of a bilaterian's body, just its tracks. "Generally when we find tracks of a soft-bodied animal, it means there's no trace of the body because they fossilize under different conditions," said Gingras. "It's usually just the body or just the tracks, not both."

It took more than two years for the U of A team members to satisfy themselves and a peer review panel of scientists that they had the right age for the bilaterian fossils.

U of A geochronologist Larry Heaman was among a group that returned to Uruguay to collect more fossil samples locked in a layer of sandstone. Heaman says because the depositional age of the sandstone is difficult to determine, they focused their investigation on particles of granitic rock found invading the sandstone samples.

Heaman explains that the granitic rocks were put through the university's mass spectrometry equipment, a process in which samples are bombarded by laser beams and the resulting atom- to molecule-sized particles are analyzed and dated.

Over the course of his U of A career, Heaman has taken part in a number of breakthrough research projects involving fossils. Last year he got the attention of the paleontology world when he confirmed the surprising date of a fossilized dinosaur bone found in New Mexico. Using U of A equipment, Heaman determined that the bone came from a sauropod, a plant-eating dinosaur that was alive some 700,000 years after the mass-extinction event that many believe wiped out all dinosaur life on Earth.

Heaman says the challenge in dating the bilaterian fossil makes it stand out from his other work. "This was the top research accomplishment because it has more direct relevance to the evolution of life as we know it," he said. "It was such a team effort; any one of us on our own couldn't have done this."

Before the U of A bilaterian find, the oldest sign of animal life was dated at 555 million years ago, from a find made in Russia.

Kurt Konhauser, a U of A geomicrobiologist, says the team's discovery will prompt new questions about the timing of animal evolution and the environmental conditions under which they evolved.

"This research was a huge interdisciplinary effort and shows the depth of the research capabilities here at the U of A," said Konhauser. "The challenge brought the sciences of geology, paleontology, geomicrobiology and geochronology together to nail down the age of the fossils."

Konhauser explains that in the past, research into the earliest signs of animal life would typically shift the date back by a few million years, but the U of A's finding of 30 million years is a real breakthrough.

The U of A's research team includes Ernesto Pecoits, Natalie Aubet, Kurt Konhauser, Larry Heaman, Richard Stern and Murray Gingras. The research was published June 28 in the journal Science.

Convenience shoulders tomato taste aside

Breeding for consistent color in unripe fruit may have diminished flavor

It looks like 70 years of breeding for better color in unripe fruit has inadvertently helped create the wet-paper towel flavor of the modern tomato.

Growers care about the green of unripe tomatoes, explains biochemist Ann L. Thomas Powell of the University of California, Davis. Ripening globes that are each uniformly green let growers easily judge when a field will be ready for harvest. Over decades breeders have selected for this uniform green coloring instead of for tomatoes that turn a deeper shade around the stem end, Powell says.

The problem is, getting rid of that dark green zone, called green shoulders, turns out to have sabotaged a gene called SIGLK2 that boosts sugar and other sources of flavor in the ripe tomato, Powell and her colleagues report in the June 29 Science.

?It is a good illustration of unintended consequences,? says molecular biologist Harry Klee of the University of Florida in Gainesville, who studies tomato flavor.
For years, Powell says, breeders assumed that a ripe red tomato got all of its sugars from the little photosynthetic engines known as chloroplasts in the plant leaves. It turns out, however, that a green-shouldered tomato gets about 20 percent of its sugars from its own chloroplasts. Without a functional SlGLK2 gene, the ripening tomato forms fewer and punier chloroplasts that don?t deliver, Powell and her colleagues have found.

Skimping on sugars certainly could make a difference in flavor, says Klee, who routinely does taste tests in his lab. His tomato testing panels respond strongly to sugar content. ?The more the better,? he says.

Volatile compounds wafting off a tomato?s flesh also play a big role in its appeal. The problem is, inadequate chloroplasts likewise won?t produce as much of the chemical precursors for some of those compounds. ?It?s totally obvious you?re going to take a hit in some of the volatiles,? Klee says.

In the June 5 Current Biology, he and his colleagues highlighted the importance of a handful of volatiles ? some of them mere whiffs ? in seducing the nose and taste buds.

Exactly what the loss of the green-shoulders trait means for tomato flavor remains to be measured. But, Klee says, ?it's not the whole story of why modern tomatoes are so bad, by a long shot.?

Picking them before they?re fully ripe diminishes flavor, as does refrigerating them. Chilling tomatoes below 13? Celsius kills metabolic processes still functioning in a picked tomato, Klee says, so the fruit never manages to replace the lovely volatiles that float away.

Even under ideal conditions, genetic differences will matter in flavor. When Klee and his colleagues pamper various commercial varieties, taste panels pan some of them and give the best ones decent but not brilliant ratings. And just because a variety is an heirloom doesn?t mean it tastes great, he cautions. For his taste panels, Cherry Roma is the reigning favorite.

When choosing among generic tomatoes, he recommends going for cherry tomatoes and other little types: ?Breeders haven?t had as much time to mess them up,? he says.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The brother of Ponzi scheme king Bernard Madoff will plead guilty on Friday to conspiracy and falsifying records, admitting his role in the multibillion-dollar fraud that destroyed the savings of thousands of investors, prosecutors told a judge on Wednesday.

Peter Madoff, the former chief compliance officer at the private investment arm of Bernard Madoff's business, has agreed to serve a decade in prison, they said.

Peter Madoff also agreed to the criminal forfeiture of $143 billion, including all of his real estate and personal property. The $143 billion, representing the amount of money believed to have flowed through the business accounts when he was part of the multi-decade Ponzi scheme, is included in a criminal forfeiture agreement, though authorities know that his assets would never approach that figure.

Court papers signed by a federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday show Peter Madoff, who had worked with his brother since 1965, will plead guilty to two criminal counts, admitting his role in a conspiracy to commit securities fraud, falsify records of an investment adviser, falsify records of a broker dealer, make false filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, commit mail fraud and obstruct the Internal Revenue service.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa A. Baroni wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain that, pursuant to a plea agreement with the government, Madoff, 66, had agreed "not to seek a sentence other than 10 years' imprisonment."

A lawyer for Madoff, Charles Spada, declined to comment on Wednesday.

Bernard Madoff, 74, is serving a 150-year prison sentence in Butner, N.C., after revealing in December 2008 that he cheated thousands of investors of roughly $20 billion for years, using money from new investors to pay returns to existing clients. A $171 billion forfeiture order entered against Madoff forced him to relinquish tens of millions of dollars in personal property, including real estate, investments and $80 million in assets his wife had claimed were hers. The $171 billion represented the total amount of money that went through the company during the fraud.

Lawyers for a court-appointed trustee recovering money for Bernard Madoff's investors had said Peter Madoff also was the company's senior managing director.

The trustee, Irving Picard, said in court papers that Peter Madoff "failed miserably" to meet his responsibilities to monitor the company's operations and ensure its compliance with federal securities laws.

The court papers said Peter Madoff had received at least $60 million during the fraud and used fake stock trades to make large withdrawals seem justified.

Picard sought nearly $200 million from Madoff family members, claiming they used Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC as "the family piggy bank" to pay for vacation homes, cars, boats and even a stake in a beauty parlor.

Picard's pending lawsuit alleges that over the years Peter Madoff, his daughter and his nephews "withdrew millions more than they invested" in private investment accounts they had with the firm.

Peter Madoff "ignored obvious red flags that the profits reflected in account statements could not have been earned legitimately, to the detriment of BLMIS and its other customers," the lawsuit says.

Bernard Madoff's relatives have said they did not know about his Ponzi scheme. The new plea raises new questions about the status of the prosecution and whether other family members are being targeted by the government.

Lawyers for Andrew Madoff, a son of Bernard Madoff; Ruth Madoff, Bernard Madoff's wife; and Shana Madoff, Peter Madoff's daughter, did not immediately return messages seeking comment on Wednesday. Mark Madoff, Bernard Madoff's other son, committed suicide in December 2010 on the second anniversary of his father's arrest.

Six former employees and associates have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with authorities. Five others, including Madoff's former operating chief, have pleaded not guilty and appear headed to trial.

Picard has accused Andrew Madoff of living a high-end lifestyle after receiving more than $60 million, including $31 million in salary and bonus, from 2001 to 2008.

Shana Madoff, a lawyer, had worked at Madoff's investment business since 1995 as compliance counsel and in-house counsel. Picard's civil lawsuit said that "she ignored every red flag of the massive fraud taking place right in front of her."

The massive scheme, run since at least the early 1990s, demolished the life savings of thousands of people, wrecked charities and shook confidence in the U.S. financial system. When Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty, he insisted that he acted alone, describing a separate wholesale stock-trading firm run by his sons and brother as honest and legitimate.

Picard's office has reached agreements to recover approximately $9.1 billion and has distributed more than $1.1 billion to Madoff's victims.

In a statement Wednesday, Picard's spokeswoman, Amanda Remus, said the trustee and his lawyers are aware of the letter to the court about the anticipated guilty plea proceeding involving Peter Madoff but had no comment.

Art Jewelry Elements: Inspired By Design Challenge: Christmas in July

Did you see the entries for the last Design Challenge: Inspired by Shells? Scroll to the bottom of the post, click on the thumbnails. Definitely take a look, there are some great entries!

For this month's design challenge, I am again using Captiva Island for inspiration, but in a totally different direction. Shells are natural elements and there is nothing natural about this month's design inspiration.

The inspiration comes from a magical place called The Bubble Room?(fyi~their website has music if you want to turn your speakers down or off first).

And because a good chunk of their decor is Christmas themed, and this is a challenge, and thinking about Christmas in July is definitely a challenge, it's a match made in heaven. Plus I just think it sounds like fun and hope you do too.
The following two photos are from their "Christmas Room" and should be used for your inspiration. You can view this room by standing at the top of the stairs inside the restaurant and looking through a window down into the room. Comedienne Roseanne Barr is getting roasted in August.

She can dish it out, but can she take it??We'll find out this August, when?Roseanne Barr?gets roasted on Comedy Central, which has tapped the famously unfiltered comedian and actress as its next celebrity roastee.

"All I can say is good luck finding anything about me to make fun of ... I mean, I've never made a mistake or offended anyone in my life!" she said Monday in a statement.

Comedy Central's "Roast of Roseanne"?will be taped in Los Angeles on Aug. 4, and the episode will debut Aug. 12 at 10 p.m. ET.

"Although Roseanne appears to be a demure, soft spoken woman eternally committed to the status quo, we believe under the surface is an explosive, trail-blazing cultural revolution. We are honored to Roast her,? said?Kent Alterman, Comedy Central's head of original programming and production.

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts: State passes down unfunded mandate on fireworks

Michigan residents will be in store for a Fourth of July unlike any previous.

Thanks to the Michigan Legislature's misguided 2011 decision to allow Ohio-style major fireworks such as Roman candles and heavy duty fire crackers, Michigan residents now face major dangers.

The act restricts local communities from protecting their residents from the hazards and nuisance fireworks may cause. This decision reverses decades of state laws designed to protect children from being maimed by explosive devices, pets from unwanted noise, seniors from sleep disruption and deprivation, and homes from flash fires brought on by wayward fireworks.

The state gains a licensing fee of $600-$1,000 and 6 percent tax from fireworks sold, while cities get the honor of enforcement without any financial gain.

Warren, like many cities, will have an increased cost of overtime for police and fire. And we will not be able to retrieve any of the fines imposed by those who commit an illegal fireworks act.

Thus, while the state expects the city to confiscate illegal fireworks, we will receive no enforcement dollars, since enforcement is under the state's civil infraction law. The state gets all money from a fine while the city can only charge for the cost of storage.

Financial enforcement is the state's gain. Physical confiscation is left to the city. Furthermore, the state usurps the right of the city to enforce existing laws dealing with fireworks on the day before July 4 and the day following.

I have received numerous complaints from Warren residents about this potential disaster in the making, as well as the continual onslaught of fireworks noise into the wee hours of the morning. The July 4th fireworks have already begun.

Warren resident Maria Pillitson has complained about the overloading of fireworks for the last two to three weeks. Chris Milewski wants existing fireworks laws enforced. A few years ago, Milewski's neighbor landed fireworks on his roof. He is concerned about his fireworks-addicted neighbor, who might cost him his home or, at a minimum, his roof.

Former White Lake Township Fire Chief Samuel Leonard Shepard, now a Warren resident, is very concerned about potential fires caused by these new very powerful fireworks. Angela Ditch is concerned about dangers posed to her property by these powerful fireworks.

How many more garage fires will there be? How many more children will have their fingers, hands and other limbs blown off by fireworks?

The Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 is costly both to cities and to the safety of all state residents.

So, are they or aren't they? Well, according to Demi Lovato herself, she and One Direction's Niall Horan aren't dating.

While he called her a "cool girl" in a recent interview and there's even been suggestion that they've Skyped with each other — the mark of any true romance — the singer herself, in a new radio interview, says he's nothing more than a pal.

"I don't even know who One Direction is ... it's so crazy. I'm kidding," she told B104 Radio. "No, Niall's a friend of mine. I do know who he is and everyone knows who One Direction is."

While they are just friends, she does note that his "cool" feelings for her are reciprocated. "But, yeah, we're just friends," she said. "And he's awesome."

Regardless of where Demi and Niall stand in the romance department, Niall's bandmates hinted he might want to be more than friends in a recent appearance on the Canadian entertainment news show "etalk." In a game called "Rapid Fire Romance," a photo of a female celebrity would show up, and the guys had to pick which of their bandmates would be the best match. When Demi's photo came up in the pile, Horan's bandmate, Louis Tomlinson, joked, "Niall. 100 percent."

From there, Harry Styles, had a bit more fun at Horan's expense, further joking, "Niall dreams dirty things!"

Since the guys dropped their chart-topping debut, Up All Night, there have been a number of romance rumors about them floating around. Most notably, Harry Styles had been famously linked to Taylor Swift for some time. When MTV News chatted with the guys earlier this year about all the love they have been receiving from the pop world's biggest princesses, they admitted they didn't mind all the attention.

"[It's] really exciting, I suppose," Liam Payne said back in April shortly after they performed at the Kids' Choice Awards. "And even following Katy Perry on the stage as well was a big thing for us. It's just amazing to be in the same room as these sort of people, for us to just come over from England and just be involved."

How Did Matthew McConaughey Propose to Camila Alves?

It took many years and a couple kids, but Matthew McConaughey is now a married man. He got hitched to Camila Alves on June 9.

Literally, how did the actor arrive at that union? How did he propose to his beautiful girlfriend?

"At Christmas time, we go around our family and everyone takes turns opening presents. So I had wrapped the engagement ring in about eight different boxes deep, so she would keep opening boxes to get with it," McConaughey said Tuesday The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.

"We finally got to her, and I'm calling my family over. She gets to it, she opens it up, her eyes go wide. I take a knee and I ask her, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'"

How did Alves respond to the star who bares almost all in this Magic Mike trailer?

"The first word out of her mouth was not 'yes.' I'm not gonna say what it was. But I did say, 'Look, I'm down on a knee. I'll stay here awhile. I will outlast you.' And I did! She conceded."

As for the wedding itself? McConaughey said his fiancee had the idea to simply put up tents in the backyard in order to construct a "village" and have their friends/family members just camp out for three full days.

Sounds very much like this laid back couple, as does the following story about one gift they received on their big day:

"[My friend] gave us a sword with a big card that says, 'For the couple that has everything. Swing your sword!'"

Each summer the world celebrates a time of warmth, fun and relaxation. For the tech community, however, it's traditionally the season in which Samsung unleashes the latest version of its Galaxy S flagship. But the now time-honored tradition is actually more of a one-two punch: first the unlocked international model is revealed, and later it's followed up by a litany of worldwide variants.
